With a growing number of schools calling themselves as "peanut-aware" or "peanut-free" and parents regularly asked for information about food allergies their child has suffered.
Is Food Allergies Rise?
Researchers are not sure if there is an actual rise in food allergies because they have no background information.
Liu said: "There is the suggestion that the food allergy rate has increased, and it can be,". "There is definitely more attention. And many of us, when thinking back to when we were in school, we do not hear about food allergies."
Researchers analyzed data on 8,203 people ranging in age from 1 to over 60 from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey completed in 2005-2006. To confirm the presence of four food allergies to peanuts, egg, shrimp and egg, participants also had blood tests. The study shows that in people with food allergies, 1.3% were allergic to peanuts, 0.4% were allergic to milk, and 0.2% had egg allergy, and 1% were allergic to shrimp,.
The Link of Allergy and Asthma
The study shows that people with food allergies were 3.8 times more likely to develop asthma than people without food allergies. For the severity of asthma food allergy also appeared as a marker . People with food allergies were about seven times as likely to have visited in the emergency department of an asthma attack in the years before the survey as people without food allergies.

Exactly how food allergy and asthma are linked is not fully understood, but the link seems to go both ways. "People with food allergies are more likely to have severe asthma attacks -. And that link is one that we have had suspicions, but to see in a national study helps confirm it," says Liu. In reducing or even eliminating allergy to the pollen, try to consume local honey shich is proved to be effective enough. It is believed that naturally honey contains pollen by-products that can act as a vaccine to help the patient in making immunity to pollen stronger. The recommended doses for local honey to take are a tablespoon twice daily to be taken for a few months before the season.
2. To identify the cause of the allergy, allergy shot is the best. Or they can do skin or blood test to identify allergens that can trigger symptoms. A small amount of allergens are injected over period of time and the result is less severe reaction.
3. Patients with allergy to the pollen should reduce exposure by staying indoors almost all of the time. When travelling, they should close doors and windows. Drying the laundry in a washing machine is better than outside. Be sure to dust house and bed completely. On vacation avoid peak pollen timing and areas and find places with less pollen such as beach, sea etc.
4. Don’t neglect the medication to minimize the symptoms Even though there are many prescriptions to lower the symptoms of pollen allergy, always consider to consult a pharmacist before consuming drugs. Always stock the medications before the season, because there may be a lack of stock during the season for its high prevalence.
5. You can try therapy acupuncture and chiropractic, but be careful to choose the good practitioner with well experience in elimination of allergy and sensitivity and reprogramming technique as well.

Within a short time this therapy proved to be effective in some people. It is because without medications and harmful side reactions, people will feel improvement and disappear of the symptoms.
Patients with pollen allergy are quite common. But the symptoms can easily be alleviated.

Acupunture in allergy

Allergy is an oversensitive effect on people to certain objects or certain health conditions. So there is no two individuals have the same symptoms for the same allergy. The symptoms of allergy are includes irritation to the skin, watery eyes, skin rashes and difficulties in breathing as well. When you have been diagnosed as allergy, you have to look for treatment and avoid things that induced your allergy.

Acupuncture treatment for allergy often recommended because there are some good reasons. But there are also different means in treating allergies. Acupuncture recently has become more popular and preferred than other alternative treatment such as yoga and homeopathy. It can be used as an individual treatment for allergy or can be combined with other method of treatment and medications

Acupuncture is chosen because it makes more sense and has some good reasons; including it is a natural treatment. As a natural treatment, it won’t cause risky and unwanted adverse effect.

Once you meet your acupuncturist, he or she will examine you first and make a special plan for your allergy treatment based on your symptoms.

Acupuncture for allergy treatment is targeting to the origin of symptoms and not only curing the obvious symptoms. Acupuncture allergy treatments will cause various reactions for different people. Therefore inserting the needles in the exact area of the body is very important.

The Acupuncturist has to make sure that the direction as well as the depth of the needles to be inserted has been exactly identified. The treatment of acupuncture allergy may spend about 20 minutes to an hour in duration. And the effect of the treatment will last depend on the body reaction of the insertion of the needles.

In cancer treatment, it is irrational to claim that acupuncture can completely cure patients with cancer. But it is also unwise to conclude that acupuncture is not effective in curing cancer patient just because it cannot cure cancer entirely.

Allergy treatment with acupuncture often can be considered as the surest and safest option in treating allergy related to food, skin condition and also bronchitis.

Minerals role in asthma

Inhaler is The most common treatment of asthma. Some people use a quick relief inhaler that is used at the onset of an asthma attack. Others use a preventive steroid inhaler. This helps prevent the asthma attack from occurring to begin with. It is also common for people to use a combination of both. Usually by using the combination of both quick relief and preventive steroid inhaler the onset of of relieve of asthma attack is quicker. Combination of both inhaler is used in asthma attack, not in daily basis.

There several minerals that seems to have a role in asthma treatment. Some of those are:

1. Magnesium.

Although the daily intake or increased magnesium diet has not been proven to help with asthma, it has been proven that intravenous magnesium during a severe attack does help. A low level of magnesium has shown to be one of the common threads for people with asthma.

2. Potasium.

Low levels of potassium and poor lung function seem to be negatively correlated. This means that the higher the level of potassium the worse the lung function is. Therefore increasing the potassium in ones diet could increase lung function.

Another medicine that seems to have benefit in asthma is N-acetylcysteine. It has been proven to reduce the amount of mucous and therefore improve the symptoms of asthma. N-acetylcysteine also has role as an anti oxidant.

Alternative Treatment

Recent surveys show that as many as 50 percent of sufferers are turning to unconventional therapy for at least a portion of their treatment - that is a large number! But the numbers are proof-positive and are bringing to the forefront the fact that most people are against drugging themselves to stay healthy unless they have no other alternative.

Some people resort to a number of options including supplements, massage therapy, meditation and prayer. Some have even found that the omega-3 fatty acids from fish are great for decreasing inflammation of passageways. But a few more alternative medical treatments for asthma include:

Magnesium - According to experts, magnesium is an excellent treatment for asthmatic patients. This is because its function is to help reduce inflammation by stabilizing immune cells. In the lungs, this is helpful for breaking down and clearing out the mucus. It also produces prostacyclin, which is an excellent anti-inflammatory biochemical that helps to prevent an attack from occurring.

Vitamin C - Vitamin C is another great alternative to drugs because it is meant to fight viruses, which are symptomatically present during an attack. The sniffling, sneezing and other respiratory symptoms can cause a great deal of congestion, which make the patient cough, wheeze, and suffer from shortness of breath. By incorporating Vitamin C into an asthmatic's diet, the possibility of congestion may lessen.

Asmachilca Tea - This special form of herbal tea is said to have a very positive effect on asthma sufferers. The tea blend is created from a combination of three medicinal plants: asmachilca, manayupa and mulluca. Since this plant combination is specific for those with asthma, it is not recommended for everyday drinking - even for patients. For those suffering from the disease periodically, it is advised to drink the tea only during an attack. And if you have a more chronic affliction, you are to drink the tea 3 to 4 times daily for three weeks, stop for one week then start the treatment again.

Relaxation Methods - Some researchers say that certain relaxation methods, such as yoga and meditation, are very helpful in keeping the patient calm, something that helps reduce the likelihood of an attack. By learning to relax, patients are able to calm their emotions, breathing and muscles, which are all great for learning to manage upsets that have the ability to trigger attacks.

There are also preventative measures that can be taken to eliminate the triggers (allergies, smoke, and pollution) that might ignite an attack. Some of these preventative measures include removing carpet in the home that can accumulate excessive dust particles and other allergens, moving or permanently removing a pet from the home of those patients whose triggers are related to animal allergies, decreasing the humidity level in the home to less than 50 percent to eliminate dust mites and fungus, and discontinuing the use of cigarettes to eliminate tobacco smoke in the home.

If you are aware of what triggers developed your bouts with asthma, it will be much easier to determine the effective forms of treatment - some or all of which may not include drugs. However, it is always important to consult with your doctor before trying different herbs, minerals, and even teas that may not be compatible with your current drugs. And, if over time, you find that your attacks have significantly decrease from the more natural forms of treatment, you may find that you no longer need a drug in your body to control the asthma attacks that once dominated your life.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Jeffrey_Meier

Asthma in pregnancy

During pregnancy, the severity of asthma often changes and patients may require close follow-up and adjustment of medications. Studies have suggested that during pregnancy asthma become worse in approximately one-third of women.
One-third become less severe and in other one-third asthma remains unchanged.

Although concern exist with the use of medications in pregnancy, poorly controlled asthma can have an adverse effect on the fetus, resulting in increased perinatal mortality, increase prematurity and low birth weight. The overall perinatal prognosis for children born to women with well-managed asthma during pregnancy is comparable to that for children born to women without asthma. For this reason, using medication to obtain optimal control of asthma is justified even when their safety in pregnancy has not been unequivocally proven. For most drugs used to treat asthma and rhinitis, with the exception of alpha-adrenergic compounds, brompherinamine, and epinephrine - there is still little to suggest an increase risk to the fetus. Appropriately monitored theophylline, sodium cromoglycate, inhaled beclomethasone dipropionate, and inhaled beta2 agonist are not associated with an increased incidence of fetal abnormalities. Inhaled steroids have been shown to prevent exacerbations of asthma spesifically in pregnancy.

Exercise Induced Asthma

For a majority of patients with asthma, phisical activity is an important trigger of asthma exacerbations. For some patients it is the only trigger. Exercise induced asthma (EIA) is the conditions, in which postexertional airflow limitation resolves spontaneously within 30 - 45 minutes following physical activity. Some forms of exercise, such as running are more potent triggers. EIA may occur in any climate condition, but it increases substantially in breathing dry, cold air and is less common in hot, humid climates.

EIA is not a special form of asthma. It is one expression of airway hyperresponsiveness. It is often indicates that the asthma is not well controlled, therefore, appropriate anti-inflamamtory therapy generally results in the reduction of exercise-related symptoms. For patients who still experience EIA despite appropriate therapy and for those in whom EIA is the only manifestation of asthma, the inhalation of rapid-acting beta2-agonist before exercising is the most efective treatment for preventing exacerbations. Training and sufficient warming up also reduce the incidence and severity of EIA. In asthma patients, physical training can improve cardiopulmonary fitness without changing lung function.

Because the treatment of EIA is so effective, there is no need for patients to avoid physical activity. Instead a goal of asthma management is to enable patients to participate in any activity they choose without experiencing symptoms. In a well trained subject with EIA, experiences postexertional symptoms only at a higher degree of physical activity than before training. Therefore it's important to recommend that sports and physical activity should not be avoided in patients with EIA.

Occupational Asthma

According to GINA (Global Initiative for Asthma), Asthma acquired in the work place is a diagnosis that is frequently missed unless the health care professional is made aware of the possibility. Many inhalant chemicals are now known to produce asthma in the occupational environment. They range fro highly reactive small molecular weight chemicals such as isocyanates to known immunogens such as platinum salts, as well as to complex plant and animal biological products. Because of its insidious onset, occupational asthma is often misdiagnosed as chronic bronchitis or some form of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and is therefore either not treated at all or treated inappropriately. The diagnosis requires a defined occupational history, especially in relation to exposure to sensitizing agents, absence of asthma symptoms before beginning employment, and a documented relationship between development of symptoms at the workplace and reduction of occupational asthma may be successfully achieved by lung function measurement, such as serial measurement of PEF at work (single measurements are less sensitive than serial measurements), and spesific bronchial provocation testing. The increasing recognition that occupational asthma can persist, or continue to deteriorate, even in the absence of continued exposure to the offending agent, emphasizes the need for an early diagnosis, appropiate strict avoidance of further exposure and farmacologic intervention.

Diet in allergic and asthmatic patients

In allergic patients, especially in food allergic patients, many alternative practitioners recommend cutting down or eliminate dairy productfrom their diet. It is because they increase mucus secretion and are the sources of food allergies. The recommendation also include avoiding processed food, refined starches and sugars and foods with artificial additives.Diet in allergic patients shoud be high in vegetables, fresh foods, whole grain and low salt. In some studies vegan diet which is contain of zero animal products have shown to be effective. Vegan diet also eliminates a fatty acid called arachidonic acid which is usually found in animal product and believed to contributed to allergic reaction. In 1985 a swedish study showed that 92% of patient with asthma improved significantly after one year of vegan diet. But in some people they feel weaker in vegan diet. Inaddition many people are alergic in vegetables rather than to meat.

Drinking much water is also advised to asthma patients to keep the lung passages moist. Onion and garlic contain quarcetin that inhibits the release of histamine and should be a part of asthmatic diet. Vitamin A, C and E seem important. Steroids appear to be a miracle medicine. Patients with arthritis or asthma especially in attack condition seem to be instantly better on steroids. The wheeze, the swelling, the pain go away.

Steroid - prednisone has been used widely because of its effectiveness in treating everything from asthma and rheumatoid arthritis to kidney disease and organ transplants. But unfortunately long-term use may cause side effects such as bloating, weight gain, and depression. Steroid can be used as injected meanly for arthritis and bursitis. But they are progressively less effective. Repeated injection can damage joints and induce osteoporosis. Steroids can cause over-activity of adrenal hormones, which produces Cushing's disease. They can also cause muscle wasting, hyperglycemia, water retention, bruising, insomnia, serious mood changes, menstrual problems, impotence, loss of libido, or allergic shock and diabetes.
The major side effects of anabolic steroids can include liver tumors and cancer, icteric (yellowish pigmentation of skin, tissues, and body fluids), fluid retention, high blood pressure, increases in LDL (bad cholesterol), and decreases in HDL (good cholesterol). Other side effects include kidney tumors, severe acne, and trembling. There are also some gender-specific side effects:

For men : those are shrinking of the testicles, reduced sperm count, infertility, baldness, development of breasts, increased risk for prostate cancer.

For women : those are growth of facial hair, male-pattern baldness, changes in or cessation of the menstrual cycle, enlargement of the clitoris, deepened voice.

For adolescents : those are growth halted prematurely through premature skeletal maturation and accelerated puberty changes. It means that they have risk in remaining short for the remainder of their lives if they take anabolic steroids before the typical adolescent growth spurt.

Asthma can be prevented

Asthma can be prevented by eliminating the main trigger. As we know, asthma is an inflammation disease of the lung that can be triggered by air pollutant, house dust mite, pollens, mold, dust, animal dander, chemicals, food, exercise or temperature changes. These triggers can produce symptoms of allergy and asthma. Many doctors and researchers agree that the most important thing parents can do to prevent their child from asthma is to eliminate or significantly reduce dust mite in the home. Dust mite allergens are known to play a major role in asthma development. Other important allergens (after dust mites) that also need to be eliminated from the home are cats, certain type of mold, dogs, cockroaches and tobacco smoke. Asthma is a severe and potentially life-threatening illness that should be taken seriously. Long term use of steroid is not recommended and has serious side effect. A preventative environmental changes is much more viable, healthy and preferable alternative.

Dust mites are microscopic spider-like insect that live in bedding, pillows, mattresses, blanket carpets etc. They live off of dead skin cells and produce an allergen from excrement, which is easily airborne and then inhaled. All home contain dust mites. Dust mites allergens must be reduced to at least 2 mcg/g dust or mite populations decreased to 100/g dust to have any significant benefit. These are we can do to eliminate or reduce dust mites:
1. Changing the relative humidity and temperature of the home: keeping relative humidity less than 50% is proven to greatly reduce the dust mite population. Mechanical ventilation with a heat recovery unit has proved to be the most effective to reduce humidity in the home.
2. Using air cleaner that have HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filters, will also eliminate other allergens pollens and animal dander.
3. Cleaning using a vacuum with a HEPA filter and steam cleaning rug and upholstery regularly.
4. washing all bedding in hot water (60 degrees C, 130 degrees F) on a weekly basis is known to kill dust mites.
5. Drying bedding in a hot dryer.
6. Dry cleaning quilts and blankets will also kill dust mites.
7. Like other asthma attack, it is characterized by shortness of breath, wheezing, prolonged exhalation and cough. The symptoms due to spasm of the smooth muscle lining the airways. many agents in work place can cause occupational asthma. These include protein molecule such as: wood dust, grain dust, animal dander and fungi. And also chemicals agents espescially di-isocyanate. These workers are at high risk : plastics worker, metal worker, millers, bakers, farmers, woodworkers, drug manufactures, detergent manufactures, laboratory workers and grain elevator workers.
Symptoms usually occurs soon after exposure to the agent (allergent) and improve or disappear when the affected person leaves the work place.

Buteyko Technique

One of the most recent alternative asthma treatment, most scientific and also controversial as well is Buteyko method. This method generated by the fonder Prof. Konstantin Buteyko from Russian. One of his follower, Dr. Paul J Ameisenwass studied 8000 patients in Australia for 6 years. His studied published in Every breath you take book. This book described that there is a direct connection between breathing pattern and healthy status of someone.

The Revolusioner asthma treatment:
Buteyko theory said that the basic cause of asthma is over-breathing habit. Or in another word someone who breath too much air. This is called hyperventilation. So in simply way the treatment of asthma is based on the right way to breath. Patients trained to breath in the right way. Breathing in the right way will elapse the symptoms of hyperventilation. If asthma patients can learn to change the volume they usually inhale, asthma attack can be reduced drastically. And the used of drugs and tools for asthma also can be reduced or even stopped.
Until 1995 Buteyko method claimed to survive up to 100.000 asthma patients in Russian. Many experiments and clinical studies hold in Russian showed that majority of asthma patients from 4 year old and over can be helped by this method significantly. And the used of asthma drugs can be reduced up to 90%.

Buteyko technique use a technique to breath regularly. This technique trains patient how to breath in the right way. The aim of simple and easy to practice Buteyko method is back the normal air volume inhaled to 3 - 4 liters per minute. The technique is so simple that a 4 year old child can do. But to learn it, there must be under a certified instructor guidance.

astma, cough, carbon dioxide, oxigen, breathing, shortness of breath, asthma attack, over breathing

Lack of CO2 causes asthma

Contradiction to our paradigm, carbon dioxide (CO2) is a very important substance for health. Even every cell in human body needs carbon dioxide in certain concentration about 7% to maintain normal live.
In the first phase of human live in this planet - earth, the composition of the atmosphere was different from nowadays. That time the air inhaled by living things consisted of CO2 more than 20% in concentration. But the concentration gradually decreased until 0.03% left now. The human body also adapted with this condition by creating internal air environment in the alveoli of the lungs. Normal and healthy breath consists about 6.5% carbon dioxide.
In normal breath, when we inhale and exhale there are about 6.5% CO2 balance with Oxygen we need to survive. In our live, environment condition and modern live style have seriously influenced the level of carbon dioxide in our lungs with over-breathing pattern. If we inhale air too much more than we need, in the same time we also exhale carbon dioxide too fast. This will cause a chemical reaction to release oxygen from blood to tissues become difficult. The tissues will lack of oxygen. And smooth muscle surround will spasm.
In normal breathing, human being inhale 3-5 liters air in a minute. In this condition the level of carbon dioxide in alveoli about 6.5% that means health. For those who over-breathing, they inhale about 5 - 10 liters air per minute. There will be a disturbance in the health which is not well visible in the early stage, but becoming worse later.
In the more severe over-breathing level (about 10 - 20 liters air per minute) there will be asthma attack. And in the most severe level (20 - 30 liters air per minute), anxiety attack occur.
